Book Cultural Portraits Archery is released in Manaus

31 of March of 2017 - Work seeks to present the reader with a broader view of archery, tradition and modernity of indigenous ethnic groups of the Rio Negro

 

The book “Cultural Portraits Archery in the Amazon: a bridge between tradition and modernity” It was released on Thursday (30) in Manaus. A work, authored by Virgilio Viana and Sergio Adeodato, It is the result of an initiative of the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS) and highlights the Amazon traditional people connection of Baniwa ethnicity, Kambeba and Karapãna with modernity, through an immersion in indigenous communities in the Rio Negro.

The purpose of the book is to present the reader with an expanded vision of the bow and arrow in the indigenous Amazon, inviting for a swim in the relationship between archery and traditional culture Baniwa, and against this traditional practice with modernity, through the Indian Archery Project in Amazonas, FAS. From 2013, action provides the four lower Rio Negro athletes high performance training targeting the Olympics.

“This work highlights the importance of archery from the point of view of tradition renovation. We see the archery more like a craft object, but in the background is a traditional instrument that can acquire new values ????not associated with it. The purpose of this book is to show a connection between the tradition of indigenous peoples and new opportunities for integration of these populations in quality of life improvement initiatives”, explains co-author of the work, Sérgio Adeodato.

Pictures showing stories like Graziela Paulino (Lacy, in Karapãna ethnicity), archer's project born and raised in New Hope community. She and three natives of the lower Rio Negro seize the opportunity to practice archery in Olympic sport. Three years after the start of the project, one FAS initiative and several partners, Grazi has won gold medals in national and international competitions, and follows the firm towards Tokyo 2020.

“In various competitions have been among the best in Brazil, and this has been very proud for me and my village. The bow and arrow given us the opportunity to dream, and chase the dream of winning an Olympic medal, it is not impossible”, out.

The book is enriched with the general superintendent of FAS texts, Virgilio Viana. Manager and activist, Virgil dedicated the work to all partnerships that made possible the project archery as a sport in the Amazon.

“This work is a chapter of a story that has been written by many hands: athletes, trainers, family, FAS team, Indian leaders, Researchers and partners. We hope this book will inspire others to dare to initiatives that contribute to sustainable development and good living of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon”, Viana stands.

The entire work is illustrated with photographs by renowned photojournalist André Pessoa Pernambuco. The professional has works published in books, TV stations, newspapers and magazines in Brazil and abroad. In your file are available images of the Amazon, Atlantic forest, closed and, mainly, Caatinga, where it maintains office and conducts expeditions from 1993.

The work was made possible with sponsorship from Videolar / Innova and Honda, through the Cultural Incentive Law, the Ministry of Culture, apart from the Bradesco and Accor support. The book will be sold in the Saraiva stores in Amazonas, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Pope Francis receives book

The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francisco, It was the first to get the Book Cultural Portraits Archery in the Amazon. This was presented to His Holiness in February, during or workshop “Human Right to Water”, no Vaticano.
