One of the most important meetings of the Catholic Church in 2019, the synod of bishops Vatican will be on Amazon. To bring the Pope Francisco the perspective of communities in the region, the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS), the Archdiocese of Manaus and Ecclesial Network Pan-Amazon (rap) place between days 7 until 9 March a preparatory seminar with civil society to discuss the social aspects, environmental and economic current region.

On Tuesday (5), Archbishop of Manaus, Don Sergio Castriani and general superintendent of FAS, Virgilio Viana, along with representatives of the National Confederation of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manaus, They met to discuss the agenda of the seminar, to be free in the FAS headquarters and the Pastoral Center of the auditorium of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manaus.

The aim is to involve social and environmental movements, academic institutions, non-governmental organizations, inter-religious leaders, business and international institutions. "This is a key agenda for the Catholic Church, and critical to the recovery of Amazonian peoples ", said the Archbishop Sergio.

The Vatican synod to take place in October this year with about 250 Bishops from around the world. Until then, the Archdiocese, the Repam and FAS expect analyze and discuss trends on the current climate change scenarios and policy development of national and sub-national governments, and identify promising initiatives that could point the way for sustainable development of the region and define recommendations and solutions for sustainable development in the Amazon Basin.

"The world has been following the climate change and the urgency of this agenda. The synod on the Amazon is a message for all of us about the importance of care for the common home, and it is only fair that traditional populations are on this agenda ", He emphasized the general superintendent of FAS, Virgilio Viana.

Seminar schedule

During the seminar data will be presented on the social reality, environmental and economic of the Amazon and the major challenges for sustainable development of the region. Participants will be divided into groups to, each one, further discussion about a topic, focusing on finding solutions. Also included are discussions and plenary, with participants contributing to reach a consensus on the best way forward to preserve the Amazon region and present all during the synod.

Among the central themes of the seminar are the protection of rivers and lakes through the sustainable management, how to avoid or minimize social and environmental impacts of large projects in the Amazon, reducing deforestation, how to mitigate and / or adapt to climate change, the defense of indigenous territories, how to eliminate trafficking in persons, prostitution and abuse against women and children and how religions can contribute these challenges.

During the program there will also be a field trip to the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Rio Negro, to move to the community Three States. At the end it will be produced a document with the main recommendations to develop the region and the production of a video with the testimony of participants and graduates in the Catholic Church and who had a leading role in Amazon.
