Noting that potential, residents of the Conservation Unit (UC) They were in Manaus this week to present the management plan for the alligator designed within the reserve. Friday (01), they delivered the document in the hands of the President of Amazonas Environmental Protection Institute (IPAAM), Juliano Valente.

The preparation of the plan was supported by the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS), Institute of Agricultural Development and Sustainable Forest (IDAM), and the Institute for Sustainable Development Fonte Boa (IDS Fonte Boa).

According to the document, approved by the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), the current stock Piranha RDS lakes revolves around 80 thousand alligators, of which, if approved, will 10% exploited. The plan rules: beyond the established quota, Gators should have minimum size for slaughter, which will allow the pups reach breeding age.

"We Piranha see the alligator as an opportunity of our rivers and lakes, and we understand that can be a chance for families to generate income by adding value to the community. For the general superintendent of FAS, Virgilio Viana, the plan delivery symbolizes the maturation of a discussion of several years.

"The management of the alligator is an old agenda that has been worked out long ago by FAS in the different areas in which we operate. It is a great satisfaction to see that the handling of the situation in the RDS Piranha is ripe and we hope to have concrete results in the coming months. This will be a milestone for the sustainable development of the Amazon ", He emphasized the general superintendent of FAS, Virgilio Viana.


Sustainable management of alligator will be carried out with safety and quality procedures. Riparian will use Personal Protective Equipment (AND) during a capture, and treat the alligators in specialized units of gutting.
