A school adapted to forest, Rural Family House starts activities in Rio Juruá

A network of partners of the Eastern territory Juruá, Amazonas inaugurates the Rural Family House of Campina, educational space with focused teaching model in the forest elements. Situated on Sustainable Development Reserve (Reserve) de Uacari, in the municipality of Carauari (AM), the space offers the high school courses and vocational education - technical in agroecology and sustainable development - for youth and adults, aimed at improving the quality of life of the riverside to encourage the permanence of students in the community.

The pedagogical front will be led by the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS), responsible for project implementation and the coordination of partnerships needed for school operation both at the state and local level. Natura is among the partners supporting, since the start, the design of the initiative and the formation of human capital, and the creation of an educational association to manage school.

The education model focused in the field and in the forest favors the standing forest, sociobiodiversity values ​​and promotes exchange between local and technical knowledge, providing continuity of studies for the children of riparian who want to study without having to migrate to the city. The Rural Family House adopts an educational process that uses the pedagogy of alternation, where students remain, average, a fortnight in the CFR and fifteen days in the community where their parents reside. The location is strategic to meet the communities living in protected areas of RDS Uacari and RESEX the Middle Juruá, a 800 km away from the state capital.

Construction of educational space in Carauari also had funding from the US Agency for International Development (Usaid) by Sitawi Finance Well, as well as partnership with the Association of Residents of Agroextractive Sustainable Development Reserve Uacari (Amaru), Associação dos Produtores Rurais de Carauari (Asproc), State Department of Education (Seduc), Amazon Technological Education Center (Cetam), Department of Environment of the State (Sema), Associação das Casas Familiares Rurais do Estado do Pará (ARCAFAR - Pará), Extractive reserves (Resex) Middle Juruá - Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), RDS Uacari and the Middle Juruá Forum, created 2014.

Natura supports the Rural Family Houses in the Amazon for more than five years. "The opening of Campina Rural Family House attests to the strength of the performance network in the Amazon, aimed at local development ", explains Priscila Matta, Natura's Sustainability Manager. "Supporting education field and forest is one of the priority initiatives of the Amazon Program, in order to value the standing forest and embrace local knowledge ", comments.

regional vocations

The technical course in agroecology and sustainable development opens the activities of the Rural Family House, in the first half of 2019. The menu of the course was set up from the demand of the students themselves. Classes start with six themes related to the productive vocation of the region: agroecology, deployment and management of horticulture, fish processing, management pirarucu, acai and andiroba. The expectation is to strengthen local supply chains and enable the development of income generating activities keeping the forest standing.

Territory Middle Juruá

Other initiatives, in 2017, from the articulation of the institutions operating in the region, It started the program Territory Middle Juruá (TMJ), international cooperation which has to finance the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and partnerships with businesses, Coca-Cola Brazil and Natura. With this support from USAID, the program requires close collaboration with members of the Regional Forum of the Middle Juruá.
