FAS and Catie sign cooperation agreement for sustainable development of the Amazon

A cooperation agreement for sustainable development of the Amazon was signed during the seminar "Brazilian Amazon facing new challenges: development of alternative ", Tuesday (11), at the headquarters of the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS), com em parceria Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education (Catie) from Costa Rica. Representatives of local institutions of Amazonas and Catie attended.

The event included a debate on dissemination of new technologies for sustainable development of the Amazon between the representative of Catie, Lorena San Román, the general director of the agency, Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim, the director of Tourism of the State Tourism Company (Amazonastur), Denise Bezerra, the protected areas manager Secretary of State for the Environment (Sema), Kleber Bechara, the representative of the course of Tourism of the University of the State of Amazonas (UEA), Teixeira Glaubécia, the State Secretary of Rural Production (Sepror), Petrucio Magalhães, and the director president of the Amazonas Sustainable Forest Agricultural Development Institute (Execution), Eda Maria.

Throughout the event the experiences of Costa Rica in the field of sustainability in tourism, education, agroecology and the coffee production chain, one of the main export products of the country, They were shared as a means of disseminating knowledge and understanding, considering local specificities, what is feasible for the sustainable development of the region.

Due to the historical preservation of the environment in Costa Rica in the early 70, the country's government took decisive action in order to conserve forests and improve the population's quality of life. During this period, national parks were created and there was a heavy investment in education quality, from early childhood education to higher education. With this, Costa Rica has become a worldwide reference in preservation, Just impacting positively on economic sectors, tourism and education.

According to the director of Catie, Muhammad Ibrahim, bring the successful experience in the field of sustainability of Costa Rica to Manaus and other municipalities of the Amazon could result in significant changes in various sectors of the capital of Amazonas and the other municipalities of Amazonas.

"The knowledge that Catie has more than 50 years of experience in the management and conservation of forests needs to be shared. And because of the Amazon play an important role to curb the impacts of climate change due functions and ecological services it plays we want to contribute in the construction of new avenues for development that consider the preservation and conservation of all forms of life ", said Muhammad Ibrahim.

At the end of the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) It was entered into between the FAS and Catie in order to intensify development models that keep the forests standing.
