Andspecialista on Amazon, climate change, Florestal management and Agroflorestal, environmental conservation, certification and sustainable development. He graduated in forestry engineering from Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ-USP), a PhD in evolutionary biology from Harvard University and did postdoctoral studies in sustainable development at the University of Florida. He was Professor of the Department of Forest Sciences at ESALQ / USP (1989-2009), with dozens of books and hundreds of articles published in Brazil and abroad.

Coordinated the process of national consultations which led to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in 1993. He was founder and president of IMAFLORA (1993-2000). Participated in the structuring of the Center for International Research (CIFOR), Institute of Ecological Research (IPE) and the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund (FUNBIO). He was president of the Brazilian Society of Ethnobiology and Ethnoecology (SBEE), Paulista Association of Forestry Engineers (APAEF), and vice president of the Brazilian Association of Secretaries of State for the Environment (ABEMA).

On 2003, became the first Secretary of State for the Environment and Sustainable Development in the history of the Amazon, Eduardo Braga in Government. In this role (2003-2008), coordinated the design and implementation of the Sustainable Development Program “Zona Franca Verde”, Bolsa Floresta and the first Climate Change Act of Brazil. Neste period, deforestation was reduced by 70% and the area of ????conservation of the State increased by more than 135%.

He is currently Superintendent-General of the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation.
