FAS implements the Bolsa Floresta Program’s Community Monitoring (PPDUC), in partnership with the Instituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amazônia (Imazon). It’s divided in two axis: monitoring of the deforestation and degradation (heat focuses), made periodically with official data from the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE); and participatory monitoring with awareness activities and trainings of communitarians to the calibration of the satellite images.
The PPDUC uses a tool developed by Google and the Washington University, the Open Data Kit (ODK), which allows the riverine to inform, through a smartphone, detailed data about the usage of the soil in the reserves, rising the efficiency of the monitoring of the forests service.
With technology used with the support of the CEUC, they can register information about activities, location and the cause of the deforestation. The objective is to qualify data about the deforestation and improve the knowledge about the dynamic of soil utility in the CUs of PBF.
Annual reports of deforestation are generated, besides monthly analysis from August to December about heat focuses. In 2014, the data were positive: the CUs with Bolsa Floresta pointed lower deforestation and heat focuses then the areas, which are not attended by the program. In the deforestation case, the difference reached 50%, while heat focuses, 27%.
